Real-Time Simulation & Testing Laboratory Using RTDS Technology
RTDS is a real-time power system simulation platform for precise modeling and analysis of transient phenomena, utilizing simulation time close to the timeframe of actual events. It was primarily developed and utilized for hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing of protective relays, digital controllers and process control devices for performance evaluation and pre-commissioning testing under real-world conditions. RTDS testing is also commonly used for prototype development and/or finalizing a new application design involving several digital control, protection and measurement devices. Quanta Technology has industry renowned power system and protection experts for consulting services related to RTDS simulation. This combination allows testing to be done without any constraints.

The goal of long-range distribution planning is to ensure that money spent today has value over the long term and is robust across a variety of planning scenarios. Unfortunately, many utilities have not performed rigorous long-range planning for many years, and barely have enough resources to address short-term issues such as capacity overloads, new customer connections, and other “must do” projects.
Distribution reliability is one of the most important issues for electric utilities due to its high impact on cost, its high impact on customer satisfaction, and its high regulatory scrutiny. Since the issues relating to distribution reliability span nearly every department and budget, many utilities find it difficult to address this subject in a holistic manner.
The electric system needs to balance supply and demand on a moment to moment basis. Energy commodities such as coal, oil and natural gas can be readily stored in massive quantities. However, the storage of electricity has been relatively complex and expensive. Impact Studies & Mitigation Measures for Integration of Solar Photovoltaic Distributed Generation
Utilities in North America and around the world are experiencing rapid proliferation of Solar Photovoltaic Distributed Generation (PV-DG) which is prompted by several factors including compliance with Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS). This can represent an important challenge for utilities since the intermittent nature of PV-DG leads to diverse impacts on distribution system operations and planning. These impacts are not only of steady state but also of dynamic/transient nature. Quanta Technology has broad expertise with the assessment and mitigation of these impacts to allow the integration of PV-DG on power distribution systems. Our methodology includes identifying feeder level and/or system-wide impacts, providing utilities with guidelines regarding expected impacts as a function of penetration level, determining potential mitigation measures, developing and reviewing interconnection guidelines and standards, and testing inverters in a laboratory setting.

PMU Simulation & Testing (Synchrophasor/WAMPAC)
Monitoring of electrical grids by system operators is a very critical task. System operators use the monitored data to ensure a safe, reliable and dependable operation. Wide area monitoring based on synchrophasor technology uses PMUs/PDCs and associated communication to transmit information at a very high rate. Quanta Technology’s PMU/PDC simulation is intended to test the capability of PDC, synchrophasor applications and synchrophasor/WAMPAC systems to properly handle the synchrophasor data as called for in NERC PRC-002-2 (draft) standard and by application/system requirement.
